Art Progress: Chapter 1

doodling with detail will cause you to lose that first impression“.

Picked from the forgotten shelf is this gem:
Drawn to Life by Walt Stranchfield – edited by Don Hahn.

I’ve read the first 40 pages so far and it has opened my eyes to my mistakes in the basics of drawing. Number 24 in-particular explains “simplicity for the sake of clarity”. It talks about first impressions and how we lose it because of focussing too much on detail.

I realised this has been my biggest problem. I strive to get the whole drawing done at once when i need to simplify. Focusing on the detail i lose that momentum and become overwhelmed…i then give up. I forget drawing is a process, there is a lot to observe. Rough outlines or blocking out the drawing helps to define the shape or pose, once thats down detail can be filled in.

I hope this sticks with me this time around, it is always a challenge even when finally realising something. The importance is never give up. It takes practise, practise, practise.
